I'm trying to go to all the museums in DC while I'm here, mostly in descending order of annual attendance. The public museums are all free, but the private ones charge something. The Newseum was recommended by a few people, and if I could remember who, I would stop speaking to them. It was awful. Despite underwriting from the big news companies, admission still cost twenty dollars. It's a big glossy building, but surprisingly void inside, and hard to navigate. There were some interesting things here and there, most notably the exhibit on journalists killed in the line of duty; the majority of the material was unengaging. The "new media" exhibits took up a lot of space but had no depth. It was not completely uncritical of journalism as a profession, but you had to look closely to see any hint that the history of American journalism was anything other than triumphant.
In other words, it was just like the news corporations themselves: flashy, hollow, and nearly devoid of introspection. This button being sold in the gift shop captured well, I felt, the sense of unearned and exclusive entitlement: It says, Freedom of Speech is not a license to be stupid.

Which country? This one's pretty tough with the nighttime lighting, so here's a hint: the picture was taken at 38° 54' 45.78" N latitude.

Don't ask me how, but she's managed to chip another tooth.
Update: Good news; the vet says it isn't chipped to the pulp, and so doesn't have to come out right away, and may never have to come out.

KonaCam #1 takes a picture every minute, although it skips some minutes more or less randomly. Here is the picture from 3:05 this afternoon; Kona was sleeping at home and I was at work. The dog walker was not scheduled for today. And here is the next picture on the KonaCam, taken automatically at 3:07. Notice anything different?

Neither my sister nor I has ever been able to keep our shoelaces tied for very long. We are both in our thirties and still can't tie our shoelaces properly. Naturally we blame our parents. I'm generally of the opinion that you can't blame your parents for anything non-genetic after age 25, but this is a clear exception.
It is therefore odd that my father has chosen to post a video he found about the correct way to tie one's shoelaces:
