Chapter 61. Memory of a Strange Game

The following is a compilation of sentences from my students' homework, in which they wrote about their experiences in their Writing English classes last week.

"Memory of the Strange Game."

Impressions

This week our foreign teacher Joel teaches us a game.

Mr Joel let us do an interesting game, I call it "dropping coins."

Joel's really a good director. He directed the play so well that no one including performers didn't know what's going on.

I had to say that last class was a little bit strange and confused. We didn't have this kind of class before.

At first, we couldn't understand this game very well. Because in this game, nobody could speak.

Three students were scientists. Four students did special work. The rest were audience and watched what happened, then did a report.

This game like a pantomime, everybody said nothing.

I didn't expect it to be like that.

Robots

... four people who act as different roles in a supermarket ...

One group was the "machine", one was the "scientist" and the other group was the "reporter."

I played the role of Robot I. My task was very heavy.

I planned an embarrassed role in the game. Sitted there like a beggar. followed the master's gesture to take the bottle, and, in peoples' eyes. I was waiting for Swang's money. The game maker made me to be as a beggar. It's fun.

I was "Robot III", my task is if coins or paperclips was down to one, I went to get the cup, empty it, sort the coins and paperclips, and then put the cup back.

It seemed that I was a begger who asked for other's mercy, and Fanny was just the servant of the rich people Germa.

Actually I was the most important person in the game, but no one paid attention to me.

And, what's more important, the experiment aims to test whether Fanny is a good robot or not. [-Fanny]

When the manager touched her right ear, Robot I picked up a paper clip on the desk, counted ten numbers, went to Robot II, and put the paperclip into the cup.

Poor Fanny did it again and again.

And when others asked us questions we could only answer "Yes, no or I don't know" In fact, I didn't like my job very much. Because according to the instructions I must touch my ear every 30 seconds. I touched my ears so frequently that I felt pain. And I also fall into the habit of teuch my ears unconciously. That's not good.

I think We did well because we had the tacit agreement.

Scientists

I were the scientist in the game.

We could ask the manager questions, but she would never gave up proper answers.

At first I thought we three were on a court as if we were convicts. Then I deserted that idea because that couldn't explain why there were two students doing the strange thing.

We didn't get the right speculation. But they told us that our speculation was funny.

We all agreed that they would not tell us the truth. We must get it by ourselves. So, we decided to dividethem into two groups, then ask them the same questions. If there's contradictory in their answers, some of them could be the truth. ... Some of them do not say anything, and some just answered with "yes" or "no," and a few people was doing meaningless things. We got no idea of what to do. At last, we fail.

I asked Harry what he was doing. But he didn't answer me, just shaking his head and continuing to write, which made me a little angry.

I acted as one scientist of the three in the game. ... So I guessed Henk acted as a salesman saling the pins. Meawhile Marrica (Maryca) took up the bottle ith some coins in sometimes She was guessed as a beggar. In reality, We were definitely wrong.

Scientist is a great post. Scientists do creative things to promote the social progress. I was a scientist last week. ... to my surprise, I failed to find the fact behind phenomenon and did a oyful report ... In China, scientists have a wise impression to people, they can find fact by questions. But in USA, scientists do real thing more, just like in movie. What we did just like a chinese scientist, In my opinion, we did not fail, just had bad audience.

Observers

They went to ask the observers but got nothing since the observers were told before not to say one word tothem.

During the game I watched the "manager" who was another "robot." Finally, the three scientists all failed to tell the game exactly and only two of the reporters could observe carefully and see through the trick.

Also there were three judges, who gave us a funny explanation of the game, making us laugh for a long time.

Conclusions

The last assignment! Yeah!

We concluded that Jackie was a beggar, and Casey was a conman person . Kari was a manager and Caro was a policeman. But in fact, Jackie and Caro were robots , Casey was a machine and Kari was a manager.

There are two company, Company A and company B. They made peace with each other in surface. In fact, they competate with each other.

Another idea, I thought this scene expressed that people were doing some illegal act.

Carter was a rich man but had not political power while Newman was a high official but greed. ... And Newman often acceptted Carter's things. So, I think it was corruption.

I imaged that No. 1, No. 3 & No. 4 were beggars. ... No. 1 would write down his name, Because he was a kind man. God would bless him.

In the performance, worker A knew about his manager wery well. So he could give best service to his manager according manager's gesture. Because he knew that he would benefit from good relationship with manager.

The show tells us something about the workers salary.

So I think the main point is the importance of the manager.

Everyone has his own role in a certain group. In order to understand someone, we should know his role and his group.

From the game, I can understand that everything in the world are changeable.

In my point of view, Joel want to have a text of our perceive ability. If some of us are mind-absent, Joel will drop a coin.

I like this kind of game very much. Everybody can find his/her own position.

The purpose of this game was to train our ability of observation and investigation.

This experiment's purpose is to stress teamwork and observation's importance.

In order to achieve the goal, we must unit tightly and strengthen our team spirit.

Maybe this class taught us to observe everything carefully.

From the game, I got some edifications. Watch something carefully and think it thoughtful.

I knew even in a very small place like the classroom or office room it can happen a lot of things at the same time.

In fact, even now I don't know why Joel told us to do this.

They had no answer at the end. Some people angry about that. Some people felt puzzled about that. ... I just want to know my dear teacher just do that for fun?

But I don't like myself to be a part of it. I don't like be researched. Like a monkey. It's humiliate.

Some of us think this game is very interesting. But some of us think it is very boring. In my opinion, it is not very interesting, but it is helpful.

I asked other students. They just widen their eyes. I don't think the game was successfully played.

I don't understand what's the purpose of this game. Is this just a game with no meaning? Maybe it is. Or the teacher just played this want us to know something.

Second, we must have rich imagination.

From this game I realize that some people always make the easy things complicate.

The game was strange. But it was not strange that people had strange and different opinions.

I was late for my sources, and I was late for this game. ... I flet that all of the game players were crazy besides Joel. ... And I won't waste my brain cells to think about it any more until Joel lets it out.

What my feeling about this game was confused and boring.

I think the game is not interesting. They should explain the game's meaning at first. Let's know why the should do that. Maybe the way can reduce the game's difficulty. In short, I don't like the game.

If we play a Chinese game the organizer would tell us all the rules and try to make every person understand everything about the game.

This performance tells us, as the era of robots comes, more people lost their work, what's worse is that the human is becoming duller and duller.

The result of the mystery is not important now. There's no need to disclose it. Leave it as a mystery.

Joel, what did you want us to learn? In the end of class, you still didn't told us the answer.

It tells us that people can't just wait for things. It is impossible for others to give you what you need all the time.

First, I say the programme was boring.

From the game played last Monday, I see the technology which is used now world wide. ... So, technology is the core factor of all the sophisticate and subtle things created by man. That's why we should study, study, and again study.

I think a lot about it. I think we Chinese students' performance in class. We're like robots. We sit in the classroom; we listen to the teacher; we don't talk and do what the teacher tell us to do.

Joel said it's the US teaching style, but I cannot understand what the US style can teach me. Maybe I should touch more different teaching styles.

Compared with many boring course, I call on a revolution of teaching method.

However, I should say it was not suitable and necessary to put it in class. especially to college students. We could not ignore the developement of one's insight, but not to practise in writing class. To be students, we are eager to know more things about writing.
